Part 1 – If I’ve Told You Once, I’ve Told You a Thousand Times
“Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a feather, stiff as a board. Light as a…oh crap!”
The two eleven year olds sprang back as their seven year old sister suddenly began to float above their hands. Rose’s eyes opened in shock as her body continued to raise without her brothers’ help.
“Get me down! Get me down right now!” she began shrieking, still floating higher. Coming to his senses, Lee quickly grabbed her leg, holding her stationary in the air.
“Sssh, Rosie, it’s okay, just hang on a minute,” Cam said, trying to calm his sister down.
“Oh crap, Dad’s gonna kill us! He told us not to play any more chanting games! Do you remember what happened when he heard us playing Bloody…” Lee cut off abruptly when Cam slammed a hand over his mouth.
“Don’t say it!” He looked around with wide eyes, as if the mere thought of the words would conjure a ghost, or worse, their father.
“What are we going to do?” Lee asked, his words muffled, and Cam took his hand away.
Rose broke in before Cam could answer. “You’re gonna go get Daddy right now!” she ordered.
“If Dad finds out, we’ll all be in trouble, Rose, you too,” Cam said, shaking his head.
“I’m the one who’s floating! I won’t be in trouble,” Rose said.
“You knew what we were playing; if we have to get in trouble, you have to get in trouble!” Lee hissed.
“Listen, we just have to break the curse, or whatever it is, ourselves. Lee, go get a cup of holy water from the kitchen,” Cam ordered, grabbing Rose’s leg so Lee could let go.
“But Mom and Dad are in there!”
“They’re watching a movie on the couch. Just go in the kitchen and pour the holy water in a regular cup, then put the jug back the way it was and come back. If they ask, just say you were thirsty. And hurry.”
Lee nodded and took off across the yard, running until he made it to the porch. He stopped for a moment to calm down, then walked inside, trying to be as normal as possible. Just as Cam said, his parents were seated off to the side in the living room, watching the television. He made his way quietly behind them and into the kitchen, grabbing a red plastic cup from the counter before kneeling in the pantry to pick up one of the jugs of holy water that were stored there. Luckily, one of the jugs was already open and partially used; an extra cup of water missing wouldn’t be noticed. After pouring carefully so as not to spill any, he closed up the jug and replaced it, then carried the cup out of the kitchen and back past the living room to the front door. His good luck didn’t quite hold, though, because Dean turned his head and smiled at him.
“Hey bud, everything okay?” he asked.
Lee’s body froze up, and he had to make himself turn to answer his father. “Yeah, fine, Dad, just thirsty,” he answered, hoping his voice sounded as smooth as he was trying to make it. He watched fearfully as his father’s eyes seemed to be assessing his face, but then Dean nodded and turned back to the television, and he was able to walk calmly out of the house before breaking into a run.
When he had made it back to the others, Cam was still holding Rose’s leg, and Rose was still stretched out as if laying flat across a board. Cam reached out his other hand for the cup. “How’d it go?”
“Fine,” Lee answered breathlessly. “What are you going to do with it?”
Cam regarded the cup for a few seconds, then turned to look at Rose. Before she could react, he tossed the contents of the cup across her body.
“Hey!” she yelled. “That’s holy water, what if it had burned me?”
“It can’t burn you, you’re not evil,” Cam replied reasonably.
“Most of the time, anyway,” Lee snickered.
“Well, now I’m all wet and still floating!” Rose complained. “Just go get Dad, okay?”
“Wait, what about salt?” Lee asked.
Cam nodded vigorously. “Go get some.”
Lee ran back to the house, ignoring Rose’s outraged you want to salt me?, taking the empty cup with him. Dean caught his eye again, looking at him quizzically, but Lee just held up the empty cup, as if he were simply returning it, and hurried into the kitchen. Usually there was a salt shaker beside the stove, but it was missing. He ran his eyes over the countertops, pushing a few dishes out of the way just in case, but still didn’t see it. He glanced over at the table, but it was still empty from the breakfast clean-up earlier. Worriedly, he opened up the spice cabinet and the pantry, pushing containers around as he started to panic.
In the living room, Dean and Chloe heard what sounded like someone rifling through the cabinets and drawers.
“Lee, what are you looking for?” Dean called, already suspicious.
Their son’s voice floated weakly from the other room. “Um, nothing.”
Then, after a short moment, “Have you seen the salt shaker?”
Dean groaned and turned his head to see Chloe regarding him with the same expression. “It’s your turn,” they spoke in unison.
